Community Speed Watch

Community Speed Watch works to improve road safety within Eastham Village and to reinforce the 20mph limit across the Conservation Area.

Eastham’s roads were not designed for modern traffic volumes or speeds. Many are narrow, with limited or no pavements, and are bordered by historic cottages and sandstone walls set close to the carriageway. In places, pavement parking further restricts safe passage. For pedestrians, the experience can feel vulnerable and exposed.

Volunteers monitor vehicle speeds in partnership with the appropriate authorities. The purpose is straightforward: to encourage compliance with the 20mph limit and promote considerate driving within a historic village setting.

Why It Matters

  • Protecting pedestrians on narrow village roads
  • Reinforcing compliance with the 20mph limit
  • Encouraging safer, more considerate driving
  • Supporting the character of the Conservation Area

This essential work depends entirely on volunteers. Even occasional participation makes a meaningful contribution to village safety.
