Public Footpaths

The shoreline path between Eastham Ferry and New Ferry – now closed

Eastham has two historic public footpaths. One remains open today, crossing the Anselmians Rugby Ground and providing a valuable green walking route from the village. The second was a much-loved shoreline path that once ran from Eastham Ferry to New Ferry, but was closed by Bebington Council in 1958.

EVPA is working to support the re-opening of this former shoreline route, which would restore public access to the Mersey foreshore and reconnect people with an important part of Eastham’s landscape. From this stretch of shoreline you can still appreciate views of the sandstone cliff line that once defined the Eastham and Bromborough waterfront, before much of it was lost to industrial development.

The footpath across the rugby field can be accessed from the village via an unusual sandstone stile on Eastham Village Road, close to the distinctive row of “back-to-front” cottages.
